London, United Kingdom — The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) is mourning the tragic deaths of two Nigerian nationals who were killed in violent incidents in the UK and Canada, sparking outrage and concern within the Nigerian diaspora community.
Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the commission’s chairman and CEO, expressed her shock and sorrow over the brutal incidents that occurred during the early days of the new year. She emphasized the emotional toll these events have taken on families and friends of the victims, acknowledging the broader impact on Nigerians living abroad.
In a statement released by Abdur-Rahman Balogun, NiDCOM’s Director of Media, Public Relations, and Protocols, Dabiri-Erewa extended her heartfelt condolences and pledged the commission’s support to those affected. “We stand with the families during this incredibly difficult time,” she said.
One of the victims, 23-year-old John Temitope Onetufo, was fatally stabbed in London’s Lewisham area on New Year’s Eve. Just a few days later, in a separate incident, 46-year-old Osemwengie Irorere was shot dead at the Yorkdale GO Bus Terminal in Toronto on January 4. Both incidents have raised alarms about the safety of Nigerians abroad and the growing concern over violent crimes.
Dabiri-Erewa commended the swift actions taken by the Metropolitan Police in London and the Toronto Police Service, urging both law enforcement agencies to ensure thorough and transparent investigations. She emphasized the need for justice, stating that bringing the perpetrators to account is essential.
The commission’s leader reiterated NiDCOM’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the welfare of Nigerians living overseas. She indicated that they would work closely with Nigerian diplomatic missions in both the UK and Canada to offer consular and welfare support to the bereaved families, in keeping with the commission’s mission.
“The safety and security of our citizens abroad are our utmost priorities,” Dabiri-Erewa stated, encouraging those affected to remain calm and cooperate with local investigations. She also called for stronger collaboration between host nations and Nigerian diplomatic missions to address the security challenges facing their nationals.
