Officer Ambushed and Killed in Shocking Circle K Shooting: Volusia Sheriff Calls It an "Assassination"

ORMOND-BY-THE-SEA, Fla. — A tragic incident unfolded Monday afternoon as an off-duty Edgewater police officer was shot and killed at a Circle K gas station. The shooting, described as an assassination by local law enforcement, has left the community in shock.

Around 4 p.m., Officer David Jewell, who joined the Edgewater Police Department in 2023, entered the gas station to purchase a hot dog. According to Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood, surveillance footage captured the critical moments leading up to and following the attack. Jewell was at the register when the assailant, identified as Eduardo Machado, an employee at Circle K, approached him from behind and opened fire.

Chitwood reported that Machado had exited the store briefly before returning with a firearm. As Jewell stood in line, Machado positioned himself behind the officer and fired multiple shots, causing Jewell to fall to the ground. Witnesses describe the sound of gunfire as chaotic, with the suspect reportedly firing between 10 and 15 rounds. The sheriff stated that there was a moment during the attack when Machado’s weapon jammed, allowing him to clear it before continuing his assault.

The relationship between Jewell and Machado adds a complex layer to this investigation. Chitwood revealed that the two were acquainted, with Jewell being a frequent customer at the gas station, suggesting that Machado may have been aware of his status as a law enforcement officer. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and authorities are actively investigating the circumstances that led to this violent encounter.

Sheriff Chitwood expressed his disbelief over the shocking nature of the incident, highlighting the horrific nature of the surveillance video that documented the shooting. He emphasized the need to ascertain why such a brutal act was committed in broad daylight.

Support and condolences have poured in for Officer Jewell from colleagues and the community. Charles Geiger, acting chief of the Edgewater Police Department, remembered Jewell as someone reliable and well-regarded, stating, “You’d never hear a bad thing about him.” Recognizing the impact of the officer’s loss, he reflected on the tragedy, noting, “The sheriff is right. That’s one of the most evil videos I’ve ever seen.”

Prior to joining the Edgewater Police, Jewell served in the communications unit of the Volusia Sheriff’s Office. His untimely death has left a significant void not only within the police force but across the community he dedicated himself to serving.

As investigations continue, authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward, seeking answers in the wake of this senseless tragedy. The community remembers Officer Jewell for his service, while grappling with the loss of a dedicated public servant who was taken too soon.
