Minneapolis, Minnesota – Flags were lowered to half-staff across Minnesota in honor of Officer Jamal Mitchell, who tragically lost his life while responding to a call in the Whittier neighborhood of Minneapolis. The incident, which occurred early Thursday evening, resulted in Mitchell being one of three individuals killed by gunfire, including the suspected shooter. In addition, four other people, including a police officer and a firefighter, sustained injuries during the chaotic event.
Mitchell, described as a courageous and exceptional officer by Assistant Minneapolis Police Chief Katie Blackwell, was the first MPD officer to be fatally shot in the line of duty in over two decades. His dedication to serving and protecting the community was evident early in his career, as he was recognized for heroism in February 2023 for rescuing an elderly couple from a burning house.
During the response to a report of a double shooting near 22nd Street and Blaisdell Avenue, Mitchell encountered an injured individual a block away from the scene and was tragically ambushed and shot while rendering aid. The suspect was killed in the exchange of gunfire, but the investigation is ongoing to determine the sequence of events leading to the tragic outcome.
Law enforcement personnel from various agencies, including the FBI, Minnesota BCA, and Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office, responded to the scene to assist in the investigation. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz expressed condolences to Mitchell’s family and commended the first responders for their bravery in the face of danger, highlighting the challenges faced by law enforcement in ensuring public safety.
The shooting, which left three individuals dead, including Mitchell, marks the second incident this year in Minnesota claiming the life of a first responder. The Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association, along with officials from the BCA and MPD, continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragic event. The community is mourning the loss of Mitchell, who exemplified dedication, bravery, and selfless service in the line of duty.
