MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota – In a tragic incident that unfolded in south Minneapolis, a police officer was shot and killed outside an apartment complex during a chaotic mass shooting that resulted in four injuries and a civilian fatality. The authorities have identified Mustafa Ahmed Mohamed as the individual responsible for the shooting.
Mohamed, who had a history of criminal offenses, fatally shot Police Officer Jamal Mitchell while the officer was responding to a shots-fired call at the apartment complex. Despite Mitchell’s attempt to aid Mohamed, the situation escalated when Mohamed turned on the officer and opened fire, resulting in fatal injuries to Mitchell. Subsequently, officers engaged with Mohamed, leading to his death at the scene due to multiple gunshot wounds.
The tragic event also claimed the life of a civilian identified as Osman Jimale, who was found deceased inside the apartment. Additionally, another civilian and a man sitting in his car outside the building sustained injuries during the shooting. A Minneapolis officer and a firefighter were among those injured in the incident.
Mustafa Ahmed Mohamed, a convicted felon with a prior burglary charge, was found to be ineligible to carry a firearm. Moreover, court documents revealed an active warrant for his arrest related to a recent incident in which he was seen carrying a gun at the scene of a robbery in downtown Minneapolis.
In a show of solidarity and support for the fallen hero, Officer Mitchell, a memorial outside the 5th Precinct in Minneapolis has been steadily growing. Mitchell, who aimed to improve community-police relations, was a dedicated officer, father of three, and engaged to be married. Community members, along with notable chefs, gathered at a fundraiser barbecue to honor Mitchell’s memory and raise funds for his loved ones.
The Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis, along with other law enforcement organizations, are collecting donations for Mitchell’s family through the LELS Benevolent Fund. As the community grapples with the loss of a courageous officer, questions linger about the motives behind the fatal shooting and the tragic outcome of the incident. This collective mourning serves as a poignant reminder of the risks faced by those who serve and protect our communities.
