LOWER MACUNGIE TOWNSHIP, PA – A disturbing case of child abuse has led to the arrest of a Pennsylvania couple after authorities found twin teenage boys in an alarming state of malnutrition. Joshua Dechant and Tracy Dechant have each been charged with two felony counts of endangering the welfare of children following a report made by local authorities.
According to the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office, police were called to the Dechants’ neighborhood in Lower Macungie Township on January 22.
They responded to an alarming report of a naked 15-year-old boy wandering in subfreezing temperatures. The boy, who was severely undernourished, told officers that his stepfather forced him to run outside without clothing as a means of punishment.
Officers observed the teen’s feet were severely reddened from exposure to the cold and snow. Startled neighbors reported the boy urgently sought refuge at their home and displayed signs of extreme hunger by eating continuously after they let him inside.
The investigation led authorities to discover another 15-year-old boy, the twin brother of the boy found outside, living under similarly troubling conditions. Both boys shared accounts of being forced by their mother and stepfather to walk around, constrained in clothing, without sufficient access to food or water. They also were made to sleep on the floor, sharing just one blanket for warmth.
Adding to the gravity of the case, investigators spoke with the boys’ biological sister, who is no longer residing in the home. She revealed to authorities that she too had endured similar mistreatment while living with Joshua and Tracy Dechant.
Currently, the Dechants are facing significant legal consequences. Bail for each has been set at $75,000, and the case will proceed with preliminary hearings scheduled for February 3 in Lehigh County Central Court.
