Prison Sentence Issued for Braid SkyTrain Station Assault Suspect

New Westminster, British Columbia – A man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for a violent assault on a SkyTrain attendant at the Braid SkyTrain station in 2021. The Metro Vancouver Transit Police announced the sentence in connection to an attack that occurred on July 5, 2021.

Reports from Transit Police detailed how the suspect assaulted a SkyTrain attendant at the Braid station by shoving her back inside a room in the station and violently attacking her. Despite the ordeal, the brave attendant was able to fight off her attacker, call for help, and escape the room.

The suspect was arrested at the scene by Transit Police and remained in custody until his court date on May 2, 2024, where he was found guilty of assault causing bodily harm and forcible confinement. The perpetrator, identified as Howard Geddes Skelding, 29, now faces a 10-year prison sentence for his actions.

Const. Amanda Steed of the Transit Police commended the SkyTrain attendant for her courage and resilience during the terrifying incident. Steed also expressed gratitude towards the Crown counsel for their diligent efforts in securing a significant sentence for the perpetrator.

The victim sustained a laceration and various soft tissue injuries during the assault, according to Transit Police. Despite physical healing, the emotional trauma from the incident remains a challenge, highlighting the importance of ongoing support systems for victims of such violent crimes.
