Pro-Israel Extremists Attack UCLA Anti-Genocide Encampment, CAIR-LA Calls for Justice

Los Angeles, CA – Amid escalating tensions, the Greater Los Angeles Area office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-LA) issued a strong condemnation of a recent violent attack on UCLA’s anti-genocide student encampment by a mob of pro-Israel extremists. The attack left several individuals injured and has prompted calls for law enforcement to identify and prosecute those responsible.

CAIR-LA urged political leaders in California and across the nation to denounce the pro-Israel attack on the anti-genocide students, emphasizing the need for the same level of condemnation directed at peaceful protesters. The organization also called for an investigation into the perceived lack of police protection for the students targeted in the attack.

In response to the violence, CAIR-LA Director Hussam Ayloush emphasized the importance of defending free speech without fear of hate crimes. Ayloush called for accountability for the pro-Israel extremists involved in the violent attack and demanded that they be brought to justice.

The organization specifically called on California Attorney General Rob Bonta to look into the inaction of the UCPD and LAPD during the attack, highlighting a pattern of violence and harassment directed at students supporting Palestine. Incidents included racial slurs, sexual threats, spitting, and the release of mice into the encampment.

Ayloush pointed out the disparity in reactions between peaceful protests by students advocating for Palestinian rights and the violence perpetrated by pro-Israel groups. The organization emphasized the need to address the disinformation, discrimination, and violence faced by students peacefully protesting against the Israeli government.

As tensions continue to rise, CAIR-LA called on educational institutions like UCLA to ensure the safety and security of students engaging in peaceful protests against the genocide in Gaza. The organization remains committed to promoting justice, defending civil rights, and empowering American Muslims in Southern California.
