Rape Attacker Gets 10-Year Jail Term for Harrowing Assault on Woman

Edinburgh, Scotland – A man has been sentenced to ten years in prison for subjecting a 61-year-old woman to a horrifying rape ordeal after breaking into her home in Edinburgh. Bradley Shand, 23, forced his way into the woman’s home through a French door, leaving her injured and traumatized.

The victim, who was alone at home and watching television, heard a banging sound on January 9, 2023. When she investigated, she discovered Shand kicking and smashing a door at her property. Shand then proceeded to throw the victim around like a “rag doll” before raping her, causing her extreme distress.

After the assault, Shand took the victim’s mobile phone to prevent her from calling the police. However, he was later noticed by a police officer on a nearby street, waving frantically with blood on his hand and wrist. Clothing and DNA belonging to Shand were found at the scene, connecting him to the crime.

During the trial, Shand denied raping the woman despite the overwhelming evidence against him. Judge Lord Summers described the offense as particularly egregious, acknowledging the profound impact it had on the victim. Following the assault, the victim sought refuge at a neighbor’s house, visibly shaken and questioning her own safety.

Shand, who was intoxicated at the time of the crimes, admitted to attempting to rob another home after the rape. In court, it was revealed that Shand had no memory of the events due to his inebriated state. Despite expressing shame and embarrassment for his actions, Shand was given an extended 12-year sentence, with ten years to be served in prison.

As part of the sentencing, Shand was placed on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely and issued a non-harassment order prohibiting him from contacting the victim for 15 years. The prosecution emphasized Shand’s predatory behavior and urged other victims of sexual offenses to come forward, assuring them of support in seeking justice. This case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of holding perpetrators of such heinous crimes accountable while protecting others from harm.
