Bhubaneswar, India — Following a violent incident during a Valentine’s Day raid, the Excise Department has announced a sweeping crackdown on bars and pubs in the state capital. This initiative aims to restore order and safety in the nightlife scene, as officials seek to curb unruly behavior from bouncers and bar patrons alike.
Excise Superintendent Debashish Patel emphasized the department’s determination to enforce stricter regulations. “We will be conducting regular inspections across all bars, particularly those operating beyond legal hours,” he stated. The days of late-night revelries with loud music and overcrowded venues are coming to an end, he warned.
The impetus for this renewed enforcement stemmed from a chaotic scene at the OD 02 bar in Kharavel Nagar on February 14. Reacting to information about illicit activities, excise officers discovered nearly 100 individuals inside the bar around 2 a.m. Upon their arrival, they faced resistance from bar staff and patrons, allegedly backed by bouncers. The situation escalated, resulting in officers being verbally and physically confronted. Following the altercation, the bar’s manager, Avinash Sahu, was arrested, and a case remains under investigation.
Patel reiterated the department’s commitment to targeting establishments that do not comply with regulations. He noted that bouncers have increasingly become a source of disorder in nightlife venues. “Only licensed security personnel recognized by PSERA will be permitted to work at bars. We will not accept unauthorized bouncers, especially those with criminal records,” he stressed.
In a collaborative effort, the Excise and Police departments will launch joint operations throughout the city. The police had previously issued directives requiring bars to replace unverified bouncers with trained security staff to enhance safety and accountability.
This initiative is poised to reshape the nightlife landscape in Bhubaneswar, as officials send a clear message: enhanced oversight and enforcement are on the horizon.
