EVERETT, WA – A family argument over religious beliefs reportedly turned violent on Easter Sunday, resulting in a Washington teen facing serious charges. Nineteen-year-old McKenzy Hafer has been accused of attempting to murder both her parents following a disagreement at their home.
According to police documents, the conflict began when McKenzy’s father, Benjamin Hafer, wished her a “Happy Resurrection Day.” McKenzy responded by expressing her disbelief in God, which allegedly sparked a verbal confrontation. This conversation reportedly concluded with both parties retreating to separate areas of the house.
The situation escalated when Erin Hetzler, McKenzy’s mother, approached her daughter in the kitchen to discuss the earlier exchange with her father. Despite McKenzy reciprocating the Easter greeting, her mother’s persistence reportedly intensified the argument, which spiraled into violence.
Court documents outline that while McKenzy was preparing food, her mother challenged her about the discussion. Heated words were exchanged, leading to McKenzy smashing her phone on the ground in anger. As tensions rose, Benjamin Hafer entered the room to inquire about the commotion.
The situation took a dark turn when McKenzy allegedly armed herself with a kitchen knife, reportedly attacking her father with the intent to kill. She then allegedly used the weapon against her mother, targeting her neck area. These actions were stated in the police report as deliberate attempts on her parents’ lives.
A third family member, McKenzy’s brother, Dakota Hafer, was present in the house at the time of the incident but did not participate in the confrontation or subsequent violence.
In the aftermath, McKenzy was taken into police custody. Her account reportedly matched the evidence of her parents’ injuries, which fortunately are not expected to be life-threatening.
She now faces two counts of attempted second-degree murder and is held on a $500,000 bail. McKenzy is set to appear in court on May 5 to address the charges brought against her.
The local community remains in shock over the incident, which unfolded in what should have been a routine family celebration of Easter, highlighting the severity and unexpected nature of domestic disputes fueled by deeply personal and divisive beliefs.
