BURLINGTON, Vt. — A man accused of a severe road rage attack made a brief appearance in court on Friday, as the victim, who suffered severe injuries, sat mere feet away. The tense atmosphere underscored the violent nature of the alleged incident that took place last month in Winooski.
Ronnie Bushway, visibly supported by family members, was present in the Burlington courtroom while Aaron Williams, the man charged with aggravated assault and maiming, entered with an expression of concern for his own loved ones. On August 26, Williams, 44, from Shelburne, allegedly became embroiled in a dangerous confrontation with Bushway that escalated dramatically on Mallets Bay Avenue.
The road rage incident reportedly began when Williams began tailgating Bushway, who eventually found himself brake-checked after Williams overtook him. Following this, both drivers exited their vehicles, leading to a physical altercation where Williams allegedly punched Bushway multiple times and gouged his eyes, leaving him with severe injuries.
Winooski Police Chief Justin Huizenga noted that while road rage incidents are not uncommon, the extent of this violence is rare and troubling. During the court hearing, Williams’ attorney, Austin Howard, opted not to contest a state motion that would keep his client in custody without bail pending further proceedings. “The defense is going to stipulate to the state’s motion to hold Mr. Williams without bail,” Howard stated, reserving the right to reassess this decision if future circumstances change.
In addition to the charges Williams faces regarding the assault, he has also been charged with leaving the scene of the incident.
Bushway expressed gratitude for the emotional support he has received during his recovery, which includes ongoing medical treatment at the University of Vermont Medical Center.
Williams is scheduled for another court appearance later this month as the legal proceedings unfold.
