Tonawanda, New York – State authorities are launching an investigation into a violent incident at People Inc. in Tonawanda. The non-profit organization, which serves individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, witnessed a disturbing attack on April 1. The altercation, in which one patient assaulted another, has raised concerns about the safety of both patients and staff at the facility.
According to a police report obtained by WBEN through a Freedom of Information request, two employees of People Inc. were supervising four patients during a day trip when the attack occurred. Upon their return, one patient attacked another in the company van, causing severe injuries. The suspect reportedly exhibited aggressive behavior by pulling the victim’s hair, biting her, and repeatedly slamming her head against a window.
Despite efforts by the employees to intervene, they were unable to stop the assault due to the suspect’s physical placement in the van. Subsequently, the victim was found unconscious and taken to the Erie County Medical Center where she experienced multiple instances of cardiac arrest. The severity of her injuries, including a broken neck, led hospital staff to believe that her survival was unlikely.
As a result of the incident, the assailant has been charged with assault and is being held at the Erie County Holding Center. Authorities justified the charges by citing the public danger posed by the gravity of the injuries and the risk to staff and other residents at the group home. Reports indicate that the assailant has exhibited violent behavior in the past, making it challenging for staff to control him during episodes of aggression.
People Inc. has refrained from commenting further on the incident, expressing sympathy for the injured individual and their family. The need to ensure the safety and well-being of all those under their care is highlighted as a top priority for the organization. Despite inquiries for more information, the town of Tonawanda police and other relevant authorities have remained tight-lipped about the ongoing investigation.
In response to the incident, the New York State Office for People with Developmental Disabilities has initiated its own investigation, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the safety of individuals under their support. Meanwhile, the Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs has not provided any comments on the matter, citing the ongoing nature of their investigation.
The development of this story continues to unravel, shedding light on the need for stricter safety protocols and heightened supervision within facilities serving individuals with disabilities. As more details emerge from the investigations, the community awaits to see what measures will be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
