Safety Concerns Prompt Majority of Teachers to Consider Quitting: Channel 2 Action News Survey Shows

Atlanta, Georgia – A recent survey conducted among teachers reveals that concerns over safety in the classroom have led to a majority of educators contemplating leaving their jobs. The survey, which included nearly 1,000 participants in Georgia and over 8,000 nationwide, highlighted the growing issue of violence teachers are facing in schools.

According to the survey results, two out of three teachers reported being victims of violent attacks by students. This alarming statistic sheds light on the harsh reality many educators are facing on a daily basis.

In interviews conducted by investigative reporter Justin Gray, teachers shared their experiences anonymously, detailing instances of violence and the impact it has had on their mental and physical well-being. One teacher, Tiwana Turner, recounted a harrowing incident where she was attacked by a student, resulting in a serious leg injury that required surgery and months of rehabilitation.

The survey also revealed that a significant percentage of teachers, both in Georgia and nationwide, have considered leaving or retiring due to safety concerns. This sentiment was echoed by teachers who expressed fear and anxiety about going to work each day.

Despite the challenges they face, some teachers like Turner are determined to return to the classroom, citing the support they receive from school leaders in their decision. However, the issue of violence against teachers remains prevalent, with many major school districts reporting zero incidents of violence, raising questions about the accuracy of reporting and the need for better tracking mechanisms.

Dr. Susan McMahon, who led a task force studying violence against teachers, emphasized the importance of accurately documenting incidents to address the root causes of the problem and implement effective solutions. The lack of consistent reporting across districts underscores the need for a more comprehensive approach to ensuring the safety and well-being of educators.
