San Jose Man Indicted for Assaulting and Robbing Mail Carrier in Violent Encounter

San Jose, California – A San Jose man faces charges of assault and robbery after allegedly attacking a mail carrier, causing severe injuries. Robert Cordova, also known as Robert Cordona, was indicted by the Department of Justice for the incident that took place on November 22, 2024.

According to the DOJ, Cordova approached a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier who was at the back of his truck. Cordova then allegedly punched the mailman multiple times, causing him to fall to the ground. The assault escalated when Cordova reportedly tried to gouge the mail carrier’s eyes. The attack occurred at the intersection of Taylor Street and 13th Street.

The injured mail carrier was hospitalized with a broken nose and a fractured left orbital socket. If convicted, Cordova, 49, could face up to 25 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and a five-year term of supervised release for robbery. Additionally, he could face 20 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and a three-year term of supervised release for assaulting a federal employee.

Following the assault, San Jose Police Department officers located and arrested Cordova in a nearby backyard. The mailman positively identified Cordova as the assailant. Cordova was formally charged on January 15 and indicted eight days later.
