SAN FRANCISCO, CA – Grief echoes through the Anza Vista neighborhood as the trial continues for the man accused of causing the death of Vicha Ratanapakdee, an 84-year-old grandfather whose life ended abruptly on a San Francisco sidewalk in 2021.
Known as “Grandpa Vicha” to his family and the Thai American community, Ratanapakdee was taking his morning walk when he was violently shoved to the ground—an attack captured on surveillance video. The incident left him with fatal injuries and shocked residents throughout the city.
Family members say Ratanapakdee, a longtime resident, cherished his daily routine and enjoyed spending time outdoors. His daughter, Monthanus Ratanapakdee, described him as gentle and well-liked, adding that the brutality of his final moments has left a lasting scar.
“He just wanted to enjoy his retirement,” his daughter said after learning more about the circumstances surrounding his death. “He didn’t deserve any of this.”
Testimony in court this week focused on what led to the attack. Antoine Watson, who was 19 at the time, faces murder charges in connection with Ratanapakdee’s death. Watson said in court he acted irrationally after his car broke down nearby, explaining that he felt embarrassed and believed Ratanapakdee was judging him.
Surveillance footage presented to jurors shows Watson sprinting toward Ratanapakdee before delivering a forceful push. The impact left Ratanapakdee unconscious on the pavement, bleeding from his head. Witnesses described the aftermath as horrifying, with the elderly man left helpless while his attacker walked away.
Prosecutors pressed Watson on his actions, noting that the victim did nothing to provoke the assault. Watson admitted in testimony that he did not speak to or help Ratanapakdee following the attack.
