Doral, Florida – A tragic incident unfolded at a bar in CityPlace Doral, where a security guard, George Alejandro Castellanos, lost his life while trying to intervene in a dispute. The 23-year-old, who was set to graduate from Florida International University, aspired to become a police officer, according to his family and friends. The altercation took a deadly turn when a gunman shot Castellanos, leading to a shootout with responding Doral police officers that resulted in the suspect’s death.
In the aftermath of the shooting, a police officer and six bystanders sustained injuries and were rushed to various hospitals for treatment. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue transported the injured officer to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, while a bystander in critical condition was taken to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital’s trauma center. Both Castellanos and the suspect, Jamal Wayne Wood, tragically lost their lives at the bar, leaving authorities to investigate the circumstances surrounding the injuries sustained by the bystanders.
Castellanos, described as a beloved son, brother, and father to a one-year-old girl, was on the brink of graduating from Florida International University with a degree in biological science and a minor in criminal justice. Despite the heartbreaking turn of events, FIU plans to posthumously award Castellanos his degree during the university’s upcoming Spring 2024 graduation ceremony in May, honoring his hard work and dedication as a student.
In addition to his academic pursuits, Castellanos was in the process of fulfilling the necessary requirements to pursue his dream of becoming a police officer.
