Shooter Still at Large 14 Years Later, Victim Succumbs to Injuries

SAN DIEGO, California – The San Diego Police Department has made a public plea for information to identify a shooter involved in a 2011 incident that recently led to the death of the victim. 37-year-old Steven Nelson passed away last month as a result of injuries sustained in a shooting at a hotel near Liberty Station over a decade ago.

On the night of January 23, 2011, police responded to reports of a shooting at Riley’s Bar located on Nimitz Blvd. in San Diego. Nelson was found inside the bar with gunshot wounds, after an altercation with another patron escalated and led to gunfire. The incident occurred within the Quality Inn hotel premises, eventually resulting in Nelson being shot in a nearby hallway.

Following the shooting, Nelson underwent multiple surgeries for the injuries sustained and was later moved to a long-term care facility. However, on December 16 of the previous year, he succumbed to complications arising from the gunshot wounds at the age of 51, as confirmed by the authorities.

Authorities urged anyone with information about the case to reach out to San Diego County Crime Stoppers through their hotline at (888) 580-8477 or by submitting tips online at sdcrimestoppers.org. Informants have the option to remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000 for providing valuable information.

The tragic outcome of this long-standing case highlights the lasting impact of gun violence and the importance of seeking justice for victims and their families. The plea for information underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to bring closure to unresolved cases and hold perpetrators accountable for their actions.
