Shooting: 11-Year-Old Charged with Homicide After Fatal Incident in Perry County

PERRY COUNTY, Pa. — A tragic incident in central Pennsylvania has led to the death of a 42-year-old man and the charging of an 11-year-old boy with homicide. The event unfolded late at night in a home on South Market Street, where authorities found Douglas Dietz deceased from a gunshot wound.

According to court documents, the boy, identified as Clayton Dietz, was searching for his recently confiscated Nintendo Switch when he discovered a revolver in a safe. On what was supposed to be a celebratory day for Clayton—his 11th birthday—the discovery took a dark turn, resulting in an accidental shooting.

Jillian Dietz, Douglas’s wife and Clayton’s adoptive mother, recounted a harrowing moment when she was awakened by a loud noise. In an affidavit, she described trying to rouse her husband, only to realize he was unresponsive. Turning on the light, she was met with a grim sight: her husband lying on the floor with blood pooling around him.

In the wake of the tragedy, Clayton reportedly entered the room, shouting, “My dad’s dead,” which sent the family into chaos. When interviewed by state troopers, Clayton said, “I killed Daddy,” as he stood in the kitchen, a haunting confession revealing the weight of the incident.

While investigating, authorities noted significant injuries on Clayton, including a large bruise above his eye and a small cut on his lip. Despite the circumstances, he described having a good day with his parents until he grew upset when Douglas told him it was time for bed.

Clayton indicated that his intention was not clear when he pulled the trigger, admitting to police that he hadn’t fully considered the consequences of firing the weapon. As investigators delved into his mindset, he confessed to having contemplated shooting someone in particular and admitted to loading the revolver before the incident.

The aftermath of the shooting led to Clayton’s arrest, where he is being held without bail. Authorities are grappling with the implications of a young child facing such serious charges, as officials try to make sense of a harrowing situation that has shattered lives and raised questions about gun safety in households.

This ongoing case draws attention to the urgent need for increased awareness and preventative measures regarding firearm storage, especially in homes with children. The community is left reeling, reflecting on the fragile nature of life and the unexpected events that can alter it forever.
