Akron, Ohio – A deadly shooting at a birthday party in Akron, Ohio has left one man dead and more than 20 people injured, according to authorities. Police believe that the shooting occurred after someone in a vehicle opened fire on partygoers, prompting someone at the event to potentially return fire. The incident took place just after midnight on Sunday.
Police Chief Brian Harding stated that multiple individuals arrived at local hospitals with gunshot wounds shortly after the shooting. At least 25 people were shot, with a 27-year-old man succumbing to his injuries. Police recovered two handguns and numerous shell casings from the scene.
Harding mentioned that some victims may have been counted twice in the initial reports, resulting in confusion about the total number of individuals affected. During a press conference held on Sunday evening, it was revealed that at least two of the hospitalized individuals were in critical condition, with others being treated for injuries.
The victims ranged in age from 19 to 43 years old, with many of them in their 30s. Authorities have not arrested any suspects in connection with the shooting, and the motive remains unclear. Police were initially called to the residence hosting the party on Saturday night due to noise complaints and reports of firecrackers.
Despite ordering approximately 200 people to disperse, police were forced to return to the scene after reports of shots fired. Investigators discovered a large number of spent shell casings at the scene, indicating that multiple firearms were involved in the shooting. The police are hopeful that security footage and witness testimonies will help identify the perpetrator.
A reward of $12,500 has been offered for any information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case. Chief Harding, along with Mayor Shammas Malik, issued a joint statement urging the community to come forward with any relevant information in order to prevent further violence. Details surrounding the tragic incident continue to unfold as authorities work diligently to apprehend those responsible.
