Shooting at Dooky Chase Restaurant: Reward Increased to $13,500 as Police Seek Witnesses and Suspects

NEW ORLEANS — In the wake of a tragic shooting at the historic Dooky Chase Restaurant, Crime Stoppers of Greater New Orleans has significantly increased its reward for information that could lead to an arrest. The organization is now offering $13,500, a jump from the previous $5,000, after a gunman killed a 19-year-old man and injured three others during a violent altercation.

Police have identified the victim as Kareem Harris, who was shot as he apparently sought refuge inside the restaurant. New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick confirmed that while a single shooter was responsible for the attack, there may have been others who participated in the incident. Authorities are appealing to the public for any descriptions of suspects or vehicles related to the shooting.

Kirkpatrick detailed the chaotic scene, explaining that Harris was pursued by the shooter, receiving gunfire as he attempted to escape and hide within the restaurant. “He ran into the foyer of the restaurant,” Kirkpatrick said, emphasizing the urgent nature of the situation. Police continue to investigate the case, with the motive still unclear; however, the superintendent suggested a possibility of retaliation may be at play.

Among the three individuals injured were tourists, including two women from Los Angeles who were visiting as friends. One of the women sustained five gunshot wounds and is currently in serious condition following multiple surgeries. The second woman underwent surgery but is now stable. A third victim from Lake Worth, Florida, suffered minor graze wounds and was released later the same evening.

In a heartfelt news conference, Kia Simmons, the sister of the deceased, expressed her grief and outrage. She described Harris as someone who brought joy and laughter to those around him. “All he did was make people laugh,” she said, reflecting on her brother’s character. Simmons also confronted the shooter directly, questioning the motives behind Harris’s death. “I don’t know what y’all killed my little brother for,” she said, passionately defending her brother who had not harmed anyone.

As investigators continue to gather information, they urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has relevant details to come forward. The violent episode has sparked fear and concern within the community, highlighting the ongoing challenge of gun violence in New Orleans.
