Shooting at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant Leaves One Dead and Three Tourists Wounded; Update Scheduled from NOPD

NEW ORLEANS — A tragic shooting at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant in the Treme neighborhood has shocked the community, claiming the life of a 19-year-old and injuring three visiting women. The New Orleans Police Department, alongside Crimestoppers, is scheduled to provide an update on the investigation Monday morning.

According to police, the incident unfolded Friday when an armed assailant followed Kareem Harris into the renowned establishment, firing multiple shots that ultimately led to Harris’s death. As of now, law enforcement has not disclosed a motive for the attack or the relationship between Harris and the shooter.

The three women, who were in New Orleans as tourists, were unintended casualties of the violence. They were transported to a local hospital for treatment, with two currently reported in critical condition. Authorities have withheld their identities and specific information about their injuries as they continue their investigation.

City Councilman Eugene Green expressed his dismay over the timing of the shooting, coinciding with Martin Luther King Jr. weekend. “Dooky Chase has long been a cornerstone of civil rights history in our city,” he said. “To think such an incident could occur during a time meant for remembrance and unity is disheartening.”

Councilman Green reminisced about the restaurant’s cultural significance, describing it as a vital hub for community gatherings and events. “Many of us grew up coming here for concerts and gatherings,” he noted. “This place symbolizes the spirit of Treme, and that spirit endures despite this tragedy.”

In light of the situation, Green emphasized the resilience of the Treme community, asserting that the incident was an isolated case. “Treme’s rich legacy remains intact, and we must remain committed to healing and supporting one another through this difficult time,” he said.

Supporting the calls for justice, Crimestoppers has announced a $5,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest of the shooter. Green extended his thoughts and condolences to all those impacted, including the victims’ families and even the relatives of the suspect who remains at large. “Every life touched by this event matters to our city. We desire healing and justice for everyone involved.”

The unfolding tragedy at Dooky Chase’s Restaurant raises pressing questions about safety and violence in the New Orleans community, reflecting a broader national conversation about gun violence in public spaces. As authorities work diligently to unravel the details, the community stands resolute, united in the face of sorrow.
