Shooting at Eastpointe Foot Locker Leaves Two Dead as 19-Year-Old Charged with Murder Claims Self-Defense

Eastpointe, Michigan — A violent confrontation outside a Foot Locker store left two people dead and two others injured, with tragedy unfolding in broad daylight on Saturday. The incident was captured by security cameras, offering harrowing evidence of the chaos that ensued.

On Thursday, Lakylia Taylor, a 19-year-old woman, appeared visibly shaken during a video arraignment. Authorities connected her to the shooting, which stemmed from an argument between two groups known to each other. According to investigators, the dispute escalated quickly, leading to the use of firearms.

The defense contends that one of the victims was armed and had previously threatened Taylor’s brother, Dejuan. Randall Upshaw, Taylor’s attorney, stated that she had no prior conflict with the victims and was reacting in defense of her brother. “She didn’t know this individual,” he said, noting her emotional response as she witnessed what she believed to be an attempt on her brother’s life.

However, prosecutors are challenging this narrative. Macomb County Assistant Prosecutor Kumar Palepu highlighted video evidence that shows Taylor firing at close range, even as one victim lay on the ground. “Miss Taylor is on video shooting the victims at point-blank range,” Palepu asserted. He emphasized the reckless nature of the shooting, which took place in a public setting filled with potential bystanders.

Eastpointe police described the incident as a devastating loss, stressing the impact on the community. “It’s a tragedy; two people lost their lives,” remarked Detective Lieutenant Alexander Holish. He reiterated that the ramifications of this case would profoundly affect Taylor’s life, regardless of its outcome.

Taylor now faces serious charges, including second-degree murder, felony firearm possession, and assault with intent to kill. Meanwhile, in a twist, her brother, Dejuan, has also been charged with tampering with evidence related to the incident. Authorities have yet to disclose the specifics of his involvement.

The court has set Taylor’s bond at $2.5 million, reflecting the severity of the charges against her. She is scheduled to appear in court again on May 20, as both the defense and prosecution prepare for the ongoing case.

As the investigation unfolds, the Eastpointe community grapples with the aftermath of the shooting, raising concerns about violence and safety in public spaces.
