Shooting at Kentucky State University Leaves One Student Dead, Another in Critical Condition Amid Ongoing Investigation

Frankfort, Ky. — A shooting at Kentucky State University has resulted in the death of one student, while another remains in critical condition, law enforcement confirmed on Tuesday.

Authorities apprehended 48-year-old Jacob Lee Bard, who faces charges of murder and first-degree assault. He is currently being held without bond at the Franklin County Jail. The Frankfort Police Department is investigating the incident, which officials characterized as isolated, assuring the community there are no ongoing safety threats.

Emergency responders were called to the campus shortly after 3 p.m. on Tuesday, arriving minutes after receiving reports of gunfire. Officers quickly took the suspect into custody. Both victims were transported to a local hospital, where one later died and the other was reported to be in critical condition.

Kentucky State University was placed on lockdown in response to the shooting, with local sheriff’s deputies and campus police securing the area. Assistant Chief Scott Tracy of the Frankfort Police Department did not disclose the identities of the victims or provide a possible motive for the shooting during a news briefing.

University President Koffi Akakpo described the event as a “senseless tragedy” and expressed the grief felt throughout the campus community, which is mourning the loss of a student. He urged people to keep the university in their thoughts and prayers, emphasizing the need for support during this difficult time.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear echoed those sentiments, requesting the public to lift the affected individuals in their prayers. In a heartfelt video message, he highlighted the fear that students may be experiencing and called for a world where such violent incidents do not occur.

Established in Frankfort, the historically Black Kentucky State University has an enrollment of approximately 2,200 students. As the investigation continues, officials are committed to providing updates and ensuring the safety of the university community.
