NEW ORLEANS — A shooting at Dooky Chase’s restaurant on Friday evening resulted in the death of a 19-year-old man and injuries to three women patrons, according to local law enforcement officials. The incident, which police are treating as a homicide, occurred around 8 p.m. at the iconic restaurant located at 2301 Orleans Avenue in the Treme neighborhood.
Authorities identified the deceased as Kareem Harris, who had recently graduated from Livingston College Academy in New Orleans. The three injured women, who are visiting the city, were transported to a nearby hospital. Two of them are in critical condition, while the third is stable.
New Orleans Police Department Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick reported that Harris was targeted in the shooting. He sought refuge in the restaurant, but the assailant followed him inside and continued to fire, striking the bystanders in the foyer area. Officials noted that the three women were innocent victims caught in a dangerous situation.
The gunman reportedly fled the scene only to return later before escaping again. Surveillance footage is being reviewed, and police have described the suspect as a Black male wearing a black hoodie. He remains at large, and investigators are working diligently to gather evidence that could lead to his capture.
In response to the shooting, Crimestoppers announced a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the suspect. The organization emphasized that tips can be submitted anonymously. City officials, including Mayor Helena Moreno, stressed that Dooky Chase’s has been a staple in the community for 85 years without prior incidents of this nature.
The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office is set to conduct an autopsy to confirm the cause of Harris’s death and notify his family. Investigators are piecing together the circumstances surrounding the shooting in hopes of understanding the motive and apprehending the shooter.
