PHOENIX — A man who opened fire on a construction crew at an apartment complex in Phoenix three years ago has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for his actions that resulted in the death of one worker. On Friday, law enforcement officials announced the sentence for Zachery Shropshire, who initiated the attack on March 10, 2022.
Shropshire wielded a high-powered rifle and a .45 caliber handgun as he emerged from his apartment, targeting members of the construction crew. According to the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office, he shot Alvaro Quezada in the leg, preventing his escape, and then continued firing multiple rounds that ultimately led to Quezada’s death.
In addition to Quezada, seven other individuals—comprised of both workers and nearby residents—were present during the shooting, with one person suffering injuries while attempting to assist Quezada. Prosecutors reported that Shropshire discharged around 24 rounds during the incident, causing shrapnel injuries to another victim before fleeing the scene.
Law enforcement responded swiftly, apprehending Shropshire a mile away after he crashed his vehicle into a parked car. He attempted to evade capture by hiding in an alley but was located by police officers. Following a trial, a jury found him guilty of second-degree murder, along with seven counts of aggravated assault, two counts of disorderly conduct, and one count related to leaving an accident scene involving damage to another vehicle.
Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell commented on the gravity of the crime, emphasizing the senseless nature of the attack on innocent individuals merely doing their jobs. “Nothing can erase the trauma these victims endured,” she stated. “However, we can ensure the defendant is held accountable for the fear and heartache he caused.”
