Lawrence, Kansas — An early-morning shooting at a popular bar near the University of Kansas campus left one teenager dead and another critically injured. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. Saturday at the Hawk, located at 1340 Ohio St.
According to Lawrence police, officers responded to the bar shortly after receiving reports of gunfire. A police officer who was already attending to an unrelated incident nearby also heard the shots and rushed to the scene. Upon arrival, they discovered two individuals suffering from gunshot wounds.
As officers provided aid to the victims, additional police personnel canvassed the area for potential witnesses. Shortly thereafter, a group matching the description of the suspects was apprehended just blocks away.
Law enforcement has confirmed the identities of the victims, with the deceased being identified as 18-year-old Aidan Knowles. The 16-year-old boy remains hospitalized in critical condition. Police have informed the victims’ families and are coordinating with them during this difficult time.
Charges are being prepared against two suspects, both 18 years old—one from Shawnee and the other from Atchison. Law enforcement believes there is probable cause to charge one suspect with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, and aggravated assault, while the second suspect may face charges of felony murder and aggravated assault. Both suspects are currently held at the Douglas County Jail without bond pending a review from prosecutors.
Major Hayden Fowler of the Lawrence Police Department praised the quick actions of the officers involved during a brief press conference, emphasizing the importance of gathering witness statements and swiftly taking the suspects into custody. Fowler expressed condolences to those affected by the tragic event but did not take questions following his statement.
The shooting has raised concerns among residents and those associated with the university, given the proximity of the bar to campus. The Hawk, part of a cluster of bars popular with students, is located just a few blocks from the KU Memorial Union.
Investigators continue to look into how the situation escalated and whether the suspects had prior interactions with the victims earlier that evening. Lindsey Parker, a regular patron of the bar, expressed fear for student safety, particularly in an area frequented by young adults.
Moreover, this incident amplifies ongoing discussions about public safety in college towns, prompting local officials to reevaluate security measures around nightlife areas. Efforts are underway to improve safety protocols as the investigation continues.
