Shooting at Salt Lake City Church Leaves Two Dead and Several Injured During Memorial Service

Salt Lake City, Utah — A tragic shooting unfolded Wednesday night outside a church in Salt Lake City, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and leaving several others seriously injured during a memorial service.

The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. at the Rose Park 5th Ward meetinghouse of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which serves predominantly Tongan congregations. As police responded to the scene, authorities confirmed that six additional adults sustained injuries, with three reported to be in critical condition. The remaining three were transported to hospitals by private vehicles, leaving their conditions unknown.

Witnesses reported a flurry of chaos as the gunfire erupted outside the church, where community members had gathered to honor a loved one. Following the shooting, the assailants reportedly fled the area heading north on Redwood Road. At a press briefing, Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd indicated that investigators believe this was not a targeted attack and urged the public to avoid the area as police conducted their investigation.

Authorities were quickly able to gather video footage from nearby businesses to help identify the shooters and have taken several individuals in for questioning, although none have been named as suspects at this time. Redd reassured the community that detectives are pursuing all leads diligently.

Community leader Susi Feltch-Malohifo’ou, who heads a prominent nonprofit committed to violence prevention in Utah’s Pacific Islander communities, expressed her deep concern over the incident. “This is a tragedy in our community,” she said, acknowledging her personal connections to some of the victims. Feltch-Malohifo’ou emphasized that, despite ongoing efforts in violence reduction, further work is needed to address underlying issues.

Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall condemned the shooting, emphasizing that such violence, particularly at a place of worship and during a sacred event, should never occur. She pledged that law enforcement would tirelessly pursue justice for those affected.

The church, in a statement, expressed sorrow for the events that transpired, stressing its commitment to collaborating with law enforcement while extending prayers to those impacted by the violence.

As the investigation continued through the night, onlookers gathered near a McDonald’s parking lot adjacent to the church, anxiously awaiting information on the victims and the investigation’s progress. Local and state officials, including representatives from the U.S. Marshals Service, were on site to provide assistance as the police worked to restore calm in the community.

With a substantial Pacific Islander population in Utah, the incident has resonated deeply within the community, igniting discussions about violence prevention and the need for more comprehensive solutions. The heartbreak felt by many has united congregants and local leaders in the face of this senseless act, underscoring the fragility of safety in public spaces. As the city mourns, residents hope for swift action and healing for those affected.
