LASSEN COUNTY, California — A shooting on a California highway has left two people dead, following an incident involving multiple individuals in two vehicles roughly 20 miles northwest of Reno, Nevada. Authorities reported the shooting occurred Saturday morning around 8:50 a.m. on southbound Highway 395, just two miles from the Nevada state line.
Initial investigations indicate that the confrontation began when both vehicles pulled over to the shoulder of the highway. A California Highway Patrol officer on patrol nearby arrived at the scene as tensions escalated into gunfire. According to officials, all individuals involved in the incident were residents of Reno.
Emergency responders, including the CHP officer, quickly provided medical assistance at the scene. Despite their efforts, two individuals succumbed to their injuries. Law enforcement has confirmed the identities of everyone involved, including those suspected of the shooting.
Officials reassured the public late Saturday, noting there is currently no ongoing threat to safety in the area. Agents from other law enforcement agencies responded to assist with traffic control and scene management as investigators began their work.
The shooting has raised questions around safety, particularly in areas near major highways. Investigators are urging anyone with information, especially potential witnesses, to reach out to the CHP’s Quincy office at 530-283-1100.
Meanwhile, southbound Highway 395 has been temporarily closed as authorities continue to process the scene, detouring traffic via Red Rock Road. The investigation remains ongoing, with more details expected as officials gather information and conduct interviews.
