Durham, North Carolina — A shooting on Sunday night has left one man dead and a woman critically injured, prompting an investigation by local authorities. The incident occurred around 9 p.m. on Hillsborough Road, where police received reports of gunfire directed at a Chevrolet Malibu.
According to officials, 30-year-old Irease Jeffrey was driving the Malibu when it was targeted by another vehicle. Following the shooting, Jeffrey lost control of the car, which eventually came to a stop in a nearby parking lot. Emergency responders transported him to a hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
A woman who was also in the vehicle sustained life-threatening injuries and is currently receiving medical care. The identities of the victims have not been disclosed, and police have not reported any additional injuries resulting from the incident. Authorities are currently working to identify suspects and have not clarified if there was any prior connection between the shooter and the victims.
A family friend of Jeffrey has shared more about him, describing him as an aspiring rapper known in the music scene as “Billy Resio.” Michael Mitchell expressed his sorrow over Jeffrey’s death, recounting conversations they had about the potential for Jeffrey to relocate to Miami and pursue his music career more seriously. “He was destined for greatness; he had the talent and the ambition,” Mitchell said.
Mitchell voiced concerns about the rampant violence in Durham, stating, “This is a small community, and it’s disheartening to see such tragic events unfold.” He also noted that Jeffrey leaves behind a one-year-old son, emphasizing the strong desire Jeffrey had to be a dedicated father. “He wanted to be for his son what his father was for him,” Mitchell said, reflecting on Jeffrey’s commitment to family.
As police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, the community is grappling with the painful realities of gun violence and its impact on families. Local leaders are urging residents to come together to address safety concerns and create a more secure environment for future generations.
