Shooting Claims Life of Beloved Grand Blanc Football Coach, Community Unites in Grief and Support

ALMONT TOWNSHIP, Mich. — A community is mourning the tragic loss of Logan Welch, 30, who was fatally shot at a light manufacturing facility this week. Friends, family, and former students are gathering to support one another after the incident that unfolded at Trims Unlimited in Almont Township early Wednesday morning.

Welch was pronounced dead at McLaren Lapeer Region after suffering a gunshot wound during an incident that began around 8:20 a.m. This shocking event has left the Grand Blanc area grieving for a beloved figure known not only for his role as a football coach but also for his deep care for the youth he mentored. A letter sent to the community from Grand Blanc West Middle School offered counseling services in the wake of the shooting, underlining how deeply the tragedy has affected the close-knit community.

The situation escalated swiftly following the initial reports of an active shooter at the facility. When law enforcement arrived, they found Welch had been shot. The alleged perpetrator, a 32-year-old man from Columbus, Mich., fled the scene, prompting a police chase that exceeded speeds of 100 mph on westbound I-69. Eventually, law enforcement was able to apprehend him on Sutton Road, where he was also shot by deputies during the confrontation. He is currently in stable condition and under police custody.

In an outpouring of community support, a GoFundMe campaign has been launched for Welch’s pregnant wife, Hannah. The campaign has so far raised over $120,000 to assist with funeral expenses and provide for her needs during this challenging time.

Chief Dan Willis of the Almont Police Department described the nature of the incident, emphasizing that it was not a random act of violence. He confirmed that both Welch and the suspect were known to one another, intensifying the shock felt within the community. Residents have expressed disbelief over the violence, reaffirming their commitment to supporting one another as they navigate this tragedy.

The aftermath of the incident saw several officers hospitalized for precautionary checkups after airbags deployed in their vehicles during the pursuit. Following the shooting, local school districts were put on temporary lockdown while officials awaited further details from the investigation.

Two deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is standard practice in situations involving law enforcement discharge of duty. The Michigan State Police are now leading a thorough investigation, which will include collecting evidence, interviewing involved parties, and reviewing various audio and video recordings from the scene.

Community members recalled Welch fondly as a devoted coach who returned to his alma mater to mentor middle schoolers in football. His profound impact on local youth formed a significant part of his legacy in Grand Blanc.

As the investigation continues, details of the altercation will be released as they become available. Local leaders and friends remain hopeful that the community will heal together, honoring Logan Welch’s memory while creating a support system for those affected by this heartbreaking event.
