Warrensburg Police received multiple reports at 7:20 a.m. regarding a domestic disturbance on Cedar Drive. As officers were dispatched, they learned that a suspect was armed and fleeing toward Hale Lake Road. According to police, the suspect fired at officers as they approached the scene.

Prior to the officers’ arrival, a bystander, identified as Tony Barron, attempted to intervene in the domestic situation but was shot and killed by the suspect. A subsequent search led authorities to discover the suspect deceased in a wooded area nearby, believed to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Officials reported that no first responders were harmed during the incident and that officers did not return fire. The female victim involved in the domestic disturbance was taken to Western Missouri Medical Center and has since been treated and released.

The investigation remains active, with police noting that the suspect’s identity cannot be disclosed until family members are notified, as is required by military regulations. Warrensburg Superintendent Steve Ritter reassured parents in an email that the school district had been made aware of the situation and enacted safety protocols, including lockdowns at Warrensburg High School and other nearby buildings.

Maple Grove Elementary was also identified as a concern during the police response, leading to some bus route adjustments. Ritter confirmed that all students and staff are safe and accounted for.

As the incident unfolded, an alert was sent to students at the University of Central Missouri informing them that the shooter threat in southeast Warrensburg had been contained.

Johnson County Emergency Management Agency reported that several local streets were temporarily closed during the response but have since reopened. Multiple agencies, including the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and Missouri State Highway Patrol, assisted in managing the situation.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting while maintaining open lines of communication with the community and offering updates as they become available.
