Shooting in Spencer: Officer Injured and Suspect Killed in Dramatic Plaza Shootout Following Earlier Residential Attack

SPENCER, Mass. — Authorities are investigating a tragic incident that unfolded on Tuesday evening, resulting in the shooting of a police officer and the death of an alleged gunman during a tense standoff at a local shopping plaza.

The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Patrick Madison, was reportedly involved in a shooting earlier that day at a nearby residence, where a man named Sean Scannell was critically injured. Bob Scannell, Sean’s father, expressed disbelief and anguish over the situation, recalling the moment he was informed of his son’s injuries. “Who would do that?” he asked, reflecting on the pain of the sudden violence that struck their family.

Police received a call about the initial shooting shortly after 5 p.m. at an apartment on Main Street. Upon arrival, officers found Sean Scannell suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to his head, chest, and arm. Witnesses later reported seeing someone who matched Madison’s description in the vicinity of West Main Street.

Madison, a Worcester Department of Public Works employee, subsequently barricaded himself in the bathroom of a Family Dollar store. As officers confronted him, a shootout ensued, during which a Millbury police officer was struck but is expected to recover from the injuries. During the exchange, Madison was killed.

The events have left the community shaken, with many struggling to comprehend the reasons behind the violent outbreak. Bob Scannell articulated his confusion and sorrow, emphasizing the questions surrounding the motive for such a brutal act. “I can’t wrap my head around how someone could do that,” he said, pondering what had triggered the aggression.

Investigations are being led by the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office in coordination with the Spencer Police Department, aiming to piece together the timeline and motivations behind these harrowing incidents. As investigators work to clarify the situation, the community mourns and seeks answers amidst the turmoil.
