Gagra, Abkhazia – A recent violent incident in the city of Gagra has sparked controversy as varying reports have emerged surrounding the hospitalization of a Russian tourist, Konstantin Belozerov. The incident allegedly involved Yuri Khagush, head of the local administration, leading to speculation and conflicting accounts.
According to reports from local media outlets, Belozerov was hospitalized with a puncture wound in his left lower leg. While some sources suggested that Khagush was involved in the altercation that led to Belozerov’s injury, the precise details remain unclear.
The incident took place shortly before Russia lifted its travel recommendations against visiting Abkhazia, including for tourism. The advisory was initially imposed in response to widespread protests in Sukhumi against a controversial Russian investment agreement.
Khagush, a close ally of President-elect Badra Gunba, has previously faced accusations of violence. In February 2025, Khagush was accused of attacking a supporter of Gunba’s political rival. Prior to that, he allegedly assaulted another campaigner, accompanied by armed individuals.
