Shooting of 19-Year-Old Sparks Outcry: Family Remembers Jayden Holloway-Caldwell’s Kind Heart After Officer-Involved Incident in Hardeeville

HARDEEVILLE, S.C. — A tragic officer-involved shooting in the Lowcountry has left a 19-year-old man dead and has deeply affected his family and community. Jayden Holloway-Caldwell, originally from Pawleys Island, was visiting his grandmother when he was involved in the incident early Friday morning.

According to the Jasper County Coroner’s Office, details surrounding the shooting are still emerging. Family members described Holloway-Caldwell as a caring individual known for his big heart. “To know Jayden is to love Jayden,” his mother, Jane’vanna Holloway, said. “He always wanted to make sure everybody around him was okay.”

Law enforcement officers from Hardeeville arrived at the Super 8 motel on Whyte Hardee Boulevard around 4:30 a.m. after reports surfaced about someone trying to break into parked vehicles. Authorities later located a man matching the suspect’s description in the parking lot of a nearby Shell gas station, where an altercation ensued, sparking an exchange of gunfire.

Both the teenager and a Hardeeville police officer were transported to the hospital. While the officer is expected to recover, Holloway-Caldwell succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.

Holloway-Caldwell’s grandmother, Michelle Caldwell-Allen, expressed her heartbreak, recalling how her grandson often checked in on her. “He was always protective,” she noted. “Did you take your medicine today? Did you eat today?” Such gestures were routine for him, demonstrating his caring nature.

The family is still reeling from the loss and wants the public to remember Jayden for who he was beyond the headlines. His sister, Jaychelle Holloway, emphasized their grief, stating, “I understand he was seen as one person to you guys, but he was Jayden first to us.”

Investigations have uncovered that Holloway-Caldwell had a history of legal troubles, including a felony charge for possession of a stolen firearm. Before the shooting incident, he faced charges related to vehicle break-ins, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding the fateful encounter.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) confirmed that this shooting marks the fourth officer-involved incident in the state this year. As the investigation continues, community members are left to grapple with the implications of this tragedy and to honor the life of a young man whose potential was cut short.
