Shooting Rampage Engulfs Las Cruces Park, Leaving 3 Dead and 15 Injured

SANTA FE, N.M. – A tragic incident unfolded in Las Cruces, New Mexico, where three individuals lost their lives in a shooting at Young Park. The violence erupted during an unauthorized car show, drawing a crowd of about 200 people on Friday night. Apart from the three fatalities, 15 others sustained injuries, ranging from ages 16 to 36, due to the chaos that ensued.

With the park scattered with 50 to 60 handgun casings, Las Cruces Police Chief Jeremy Story revealed that evidence pointed to multiple shooters using various weapons from two opposing groups. The hostility between these groups is believed to be the driving force behind the shootings, causing collateral damage to several bystanders caught in the crossfire.

Among the deceased were a 16-year-old boy, an 18-year-old, and a 19-year-old man, with the identities of the victims and other injured individuals withheld at this time. Local authorities, including New Mexico State Police, Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Office, FBI, and ATF, are collaborating in the investigation to identify and apprehend the perpetrators responsible for this senseless act of violence.

Las Cruces Fire Chief Michael Daniels reported that 11 of the injured were transported to nearby hospitals, with some requiring treatment at the regional trauma center in El Paso. As the search for suspects continues, authorities are urging witnesses to come forward with any information or footage that could aid in the investigation.

In response to the tragedy, city officials and leaders expressed their condolences and solidarity with the affected families and community members. Mayor Eric Enriquez emphasized the need for unity and support in the face of such a devastating incident, urging residents to stand together during this challenging time.

The incident has not only shaken the Las Cruces community but has also sparked conversations about public safety measures, gun violence, and the need for stricter regulations. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham lamented the lack of progress in passing public safety bills before the legislative session ended, calling for more accountability and action to prevent such tragedies from reoccurring.

As the investigation unfolds and authorities work towards bringing those responsible to justice, the repercussions of this violent act continue to reverberate throughout the state, urging a collective effort to address the root causes of such incidents and ensure the safety and well-being of all New Mexico residents.
