Shooting Tragedy at North Marion Middle School Leaves Father Dead and Children Traumatized

OCALA, Florida – A tragic incident unfolded just outside North Marion Middle School, resulting in the death of a man, Joseph Coles, and the arrest of another individual by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. The victim’s family, including his four children, were reportedly present at the scene of the shooting.

Coles, a devoted father, had attended an award ceremony for one of his children at the school the previous night. However, the following morning brought a devastating reality as his children woke up without their father. The senseless act of violence, witnessed by families and children, has left the community in shock and mourning.

According to the authorities, Roderick Watson, the suspect charged with homicide, and Coles were engaged in a confrontation in the school parking lot when Watson allegedly produced a gun and fatally shot Coles. The heart-wrenching event unfolded in front of horrified onlookers, including Woo Hicks, Cole’s roommate, who rushed to aid him before the tragic outcome.

Despite efforts to save Coles, he succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. Lt. Paul Bloom of the Marion County Sheriff’s Office emphasized the inherent dangers of bringing firearms onto school premises, underscoring the traumatic impact on the witnesses, particularly the children who were present during the incident.

Watson, who claimed self-defense, was apprehended at the scene and later charged with second-degree murder. However, investigation findings revealed that Coles was unarmed, prompting questions about the validity of Watson’s defense. The victim’s loved ones voiced their grief and disbelief, emphasizing the profound loss for Coles’ four children who are now without their father.

Community members, including Jacqueline and Robert Brown, the godparents of Coles, vowed to support and care for his children in the wake of this tragedy. Coles, a member of Anchor Ministries in Ocala, was known for his devotion to his children and his active participation in the church community. Senior Pastor Sophilia Givens highlighted Coles’ legacy and the enduring impact he had on those around him.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of this senseless act of violence, the tragic loss of Joseph Coles serves as a stark reminder of the devastating effects of gun violence and the importance of ensuring safety and security in our schools.
