Lawrenceville, Georgia — Four adults with connections to the Indian American community were shot and killed during a domestic dispute in a suburb of Atlanta early Friday. Three children who were present managed to survive by taking refuge in a closet, according to officials from the Gwinnett County Police Department.

The deceased have been identified as Meemu Dogra, 43; Gourav Kumar, 33; Nidhi Chander, 37; and Harish Chander, 38, all of Lawrenceville. The suspected shooter, Vijay Kumar, 51, husband to Dogra, was apprehended by authorities and is facing several serious charges, including multiple counts of murder and child cruelty.

The Consulate General of India in Atlanta expressed its condolences on social media, confirming that an Indian national was among the victims and offering support to the grieving family.

Police received a 911 call shortly after 2:30 a.m. on January 24 regarding a shooting at a residence on Brook Ivy Court. Responding officers found the four adults deceased from gunshot wounds when they arrived at the scene.

Initial investigations revealed that the conflict began at another home involving Dogra and her husband before they traveled to Brook Ivy Court. Inside the residence were Dogra’s relatives, including Gourav Kumar, Nidhi Chander, and Harish Chander, along with two young children aged seven and ten.

During the shooting, the 12-year-old son of Dogra and Vijay Kumar showed remarkable presence of mind. He hid in a closet with the other children and managed to call 911, providing crucial details that allowed officers to respond swiftly to the scene. Thankfully, all three children escaped physical harm but may face emotional repercussions from the traumatic event.

When the police arrived, Vijay Kumar’s vehicle was still parked outside, prompting officers to deploy K-9 units to locate him. He was found hiding in a wooded area nearby and was taken into custody without resistance.

Kumar’s charges include four counts of aggravated assault, four counts of felony murder, and cruelty to children, among others.

Law enforcement officials commended the bravery of the children for their quick thinking, which likely contributed to the prompt police response. Although physically unharmed, the lasting psychological effects of the incident are a concern for the children involved.

As the investigation unfolds, communities are left to grapple with the tragedy and the impact on the families affected.
