Sleeping 36-year-old Asian woman shot dead by home invader who was part of group targeting Asian families

EVERETT, WA – The family and friends of Irah Sok are mourning a devastating loss, after the respected photographer was shot and killed while sleeping beside her husband and young son during a brutal home invasion last year. Authorities say Sok, 36, was targeted in her own bedroom in the early hours of August 19, 2022, and her death has become a grim focal point in a series of violent robberies that terrorized the region.

Sok, renowned in the Everett area for her maternity and newborn photography, had recently celebrated the opening of her own studio. Her life came to a sudden and tragic end during an attack that prosecutors say was part of a coordinated crime spree preying on Asian households throughout Washington state.

According to law enforcement, the perpetrators, led by 24-year-old Christopher Johnson, meticulously selected their targets through social media and carefully planned their break-ins. The group often struck between 2 a.m. and 5 a.m., choosing moments when families were most vulnerable. In many cases, authorities say, the suspects falsely claimed to be law enforcement as they entered the homes, adding to the confusion and fear.

On the night she was killed, Irah Sok was asleep next to her husband and their seven-year-old son when Johnson and two accomplices allegedly broke in before dawn. During the chaos, Sok’s husband was forcibly restrained with zip ties, while Sok was fatally shot in the head. The intruders then ransacked the home, fleeing with thousands of dollars’ worth of luxury goods. Remarkably, Sok’s son was unharmed physically, but has since faced the unimaginable trauma left in the attack’s wake.

The violence in the Sok home marked a grim escalation in a broader series of robberies, indictments revealed, with the criminal group specifically targeting households they believed to be more vulnerable. Prosecutors say that in addition to theft, Johnson and his associates threatened, bound, and terrorized their victims, including children as young as nine.

Following the fatal break-in, Sok’s husband managed to escape his restraints and summon help, but it was too late to save his wife. The community soon learned that Irah Sok, a creative professional known for capturing intimate family moments, had been senselessly killed, sending shockwaves through Everett.

In the months that followed, Johnson was arrested and subsequently pleaded guilty to numerous federal charges related to his involvement in the crime ring. Documents outlined the group’s operation across several counties in Washington, as well as Arizona, pointing to a well-organized pattern of violence and intimidation.

Under a plea agreement, Johnson is also expected to plead guilty to a state charge of second-degree murder related specifically to Sok’s killing. His formal appearance in Snohomish County Superior Court is scheduled for February 17, while federal sentencing is set for early May.

Authorities continue to unravel the full scope of the criminal network Johnson participated in, but for those who knew Irah Sok, the focus remains on honoring her legacy and supporting her loved ones as they cope with a deeply personal tragedy.
