Smith Linked to Vehicle Theft Before Fatal Fort Pierce Shooting: Police Investigating Possible Connection to Other Shootings

Fort Pierce, Florida – A man involved in an exchange of gunfire with Fort Pierce Police Department (FPPD) officers has been identified as Bernard Smith, 28. The incident occurred following a vehicle theft that took place just before the fatal shooting on Saturday morning. FPPD is now investigating whether Smith is connected to three more shootings that resulted in two fatalities and one individual hospitalized in critical condition.

During a news conference on Monday, Maj. Michael Santiago of the FPPD described the events as dynamic, fast-moving, and complex. Officers responded to two 911 calls reporting a shooting near North 24th Street and an automobile theft. The stolen vehicle was located near 24th Street, where officers were already heading due to the shooting call. Upon hearing gunfire, the officers encountered Smith, who was identified as the individual responsible for the shots. An exchange of fire ensued, resulting in Smith’s death.

The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office (SLCSO) also responded to the scene, where they discovered two additional shooting victims who had succumbed to their injuries. The victims were identified as Roosevelt Benjamin, 59, and Devin Bradley, 24, the latter of whom worked in the IT Department of the police department.

The circumstances surrounding the involvement of Smith in the shootings of the three victims remain unclear. However, Santiago acknowledged Smith’s criminal history during the news conference. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is leading the investigation into the shooting that led to Smith’s death, while the officers involved have been put on administrative leave as per department protocol.

FPPD is actively continuing its investigation to determine the events leading to the shootings and any potential links between Smith and the other victims. The motive behind the incidents remains unknown at this time. With multiple agencies involved in the aftermath of the shootings, authorities are working diligently to piece together the sequence of events and gather evidence to bring clarity to the situation.
