Splashpad Shooting Survivor Update: 6 Hospital Released, 3 Still Critical

ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. – Six of the nine survivors of the Rochester Hills splash pad shooting have been discharged from the hospital, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office. Three survivors, including a 4-year-old boy, a 42-year-old man, and a 31-year-old man, were released on Tuesday. They joined three other survivors who were discharged the day before. However, three survivors, including an 8-year-old boy, his 39-year-old mother, and a 30-year-old woman, remain hospitalized with critical injuries.

The shooting at Brooklands Splash Pad in Rochester Hills left a total of 9 people injured, including two young boys who are brothers. The shooter, engaged in a standoff with police, ultimately took his own life on Saturday. Sheriff Michael Bouchard mentioned that the motive behind the shooting remains unclear, and evidence suggests that the shooter believed he was being monitored through electronic devices.

Investigators recovered twelve guns, including the murder weapon, a 9 mm pistol, from the scene and the shooter’s residence. The gunman, who lived with his mother, legally purchased the murder weapon in 2015. Michigan’s Red Flag laws, enacted earlier this year, allow for the removal of firearms from individuals deemed a threat to themselves or others through an extreme risk protection order (ERPO) requested by specified individuals. Bouchard emphasized the importance of addressing mental health concerns and seeking help from mental health professionals or law enforcement if necessary.

As the investigation continues, the gunman’s mother, who was away on a road trip during the shooting, has retained legal representation. Efforts to gather information about her son have been met with challenges. Additionally, two verified GoFundMe drives have been established to support families affected by the shooting, including one for a family with two children and a parent injured, and another for a couple injured while shielding their children.
