Standoff Ends: Louisiana Police Officers Among Five Victims Shot in Kenner Incident

Kenner, Louisiana – Three police officers in Kenner, Louisiana, were among the five victims shot on Sunday morning during an active shooter situation. The suspect, involved in a standoff with the police at a home on Farm Avenue in Kenner, was later killed in a police shooting. The incident also led to an active shooter report in the area during the afternoon.

According to officials, the active shooter was reported around 3:45 p.m. EDT near the Kenner/St. Charles Parish line along Airline Highway. Authorities warned the public to avoid the eastbound section of Airline Highway in the vicinity of the St. Charles Parish line due to the ongoing situation.

In a statement released by St. Charles Parish Sheriff Greg Champagne, it was confirmed that the three Kenner police officers shot in the incident were in stable condition, with two already released from the hospital. The suspect involved in the shootings was neutralized by law enforcement during the standoff.

The Louisiana Fraternal Order of Police had earlier reported that one officer was in critical condition, with the incident occurring when three officers were shot during a confrontation at a residence in Kenner. In addition to the officers, two other individuals were also shot at the same location earlier that morning.

Following the incidents, SWAT team officers were dispatched to the scene in the afternoon, with the suspect firing at an armored vehicle. The situation ultimately resulted in the sniper firing at the suspect, identified as 31-year-old Matthew Lathers, who died at the scene.

Authorities revealed that Lathers was also wanted in connection to a holdup and shooting that occurred earlier in the week, leaving a man in critical condition. The possible link between the active shooter situation in the afternoon and the earlier shootings has not been confirmed.
