Stepdaughter’s ex-boyfriend executes Florida man after shooting him in argument over dog

MIAMI GARDENS, FL – A family’s world was shattered Thursday evening after a deadly confrontation at their home left Yasmany Rodriguez Fernandez fatally wounded, while his wife, stepdaughter, and infant child were left to grapple with the aftermath of the violence.

Police responded to the 3300 block of NW 177th Terrace just after 7 p.m., where they found Fernandez on the porch, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency responders pronounced him dead at the scene. The violence unfolded as family members cowered inside the residence, spared physically but left traumatized by the ordeal.

Investigators say the incident stemmed from an ongoing dispute involving Fernandez’s stepdaughter’s former boyfriend, Sylvester Grice-Jordan, 32, who now faces charges of second-degree murder and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony. Authorities allege that Grice-Jordan confronted Fernandez outside the family’s home after a series of personal conflicts, culminating in a deadly escalation.

The stepdaughter, who had been in a relationship with Grice-Jordan, told detectives she and the suspect had lived with the family until earlier this month. Tension had been mounting for weeks, she said, and Grice-Jordan was asked to leave the residence on December 15. He left behind his dog, further fueling disputes between him and the household.

On the day of the shooting, Grice-Jordan was asked to collect his dog after it made a mess in the house. What should have been a routine retrieval quickly unraveled into violence. According to police reports, Grice-Jordan and Fernandez argued on the home’s porch after both men briefly displayed firearms but initially did not draw them.

The situation escalated when Grice-Jordan allegedly shot Fernandez, prompting the wounded man to call inside for someone to alert 911. Family members, including Fernandez’s wife, stepdaughter, and their 8-month-old baby, were present inside and heard the commotion but were not physically harmed.

Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators reportedly shows Grice-Jordan demanding Fernandez’s keys and questioning why he had a gun. Authorities say Grice-Jordan then pointed a rifle at the already-wounded Fernandez and began counting down from five before firing additional rounds, leading to Fernandez’s death.

When officers arrived at the scene, they encountered Grice-Jordan still holding the weapon. He complied with commands to drop the firearm and was taken into custody without further incident. Inside the house, officers found the rest of the family scared but unharmed.

Grice-Jordan was booked into Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, where he remains held without bond. A hearing is scheduled for Monday as investigators continue piecing together the details of the fatal encounter.

Fernandez’s family now faces an uncertain future as they mourn the loss of a husband and stepfather. Meanwhile, authorities are urging anyone affected by domestic violence or family disputes to seek assistance before disagreements escalate into tragedy.
