Student Fatally Shot by Police After Pointing Pellet Rifle at Wisconsin School Officers

MOUNT HOREB, Wis. – A tragic incident unfolded at Mount Horeb Middle School in Wisconsin, when a student was shot and killed by police after pointing a pellet rifle at officers. The student, whose identity remains undisclosed, reportedly refused to drop the weapon, leading to the fatal confrontation.

The State Department of Justice has offered limited details about the incident, which occurred in Mount Horeb, located approximately 25 miles west of Madison, the state capital. Despite the harrowing nature of the event, no physical injuries were sustained by anyone else involved. The school was placed on lockdown for several hours as authorities responded to the situation.

Law enforcement was alerted to the scene after receiving a call regarding an individual with a backpack and a long gun seen moving towards the school. Upon arrival, officers instructed the student to disarm, but the student failed to comply. Instead, the student aimed the weapon at officers, prompting them to open fire, resulting in the student’s tragic demise.

According to the Department of Justice, the weapon in question was identified as a Ruger .177-caliber pellet rifle. Additionally, it was confirmed that officers present at the scene were equipped with body cameras. Following the incident, classes within the Mount Horeb school district were canceled on both Thursday and Friday as the community grappled with the aftermath of the shooting.
