Hutchinson, Kansas – Law enforcement authorities in Reno County are currently investigating a suspect in connection with multiple charges stemming from a domestic incident in Hutchinson. The incident unfolded on Tuesday, prompting a swift response from officers with the Hutchinson Police Department and other law enforcement agencies in the area.
Reports indicate that officers were called to the scene of a domestic disturbance involving an armed individual at a location near 17th Avenue and Plum Street in Hutchinson. Upon arrival, officers discovered a female victim at a nearby Kwik Shop who had sustained injuries and was subsequently taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for evaluation and treatment by Reno County EMS.
Authorities quickly identified the suspect as 23-year-old Damon Cantu of Hutchinson and established a perimeter around his location. Despite repeated attempts to make contact with Cantu, including calls for his surrender from the Reno County S.W.A.T. team, he failed to comply with law enforcement directives. Eventually, the S.W.A.T. team was forced to enter the residence and apprehend Cantu.
Cantu is currently facing a litany of charges, including Attempted 2nd Degree Murder, Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon, Aggravated Battery – Strangulation, Aggravated Kidnapping, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Criminal Threat, and additional offenses. Authorities have expressed gratitude for the assistance provided by various agencies during the incident, including the Reno County Sheriff’s Office, South Hutchinson Police Department, Kansas Highway Patrol, and Reno County EMS.
The case remains an active investigation, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward by contacting Reno County Crime Stoppers or the Hutchinson Police Department. All suspects, including Cantu, are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
