New York, Queens – A tragic incident has shaken the community as NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller was fatally shot during a routine traffic stop by Guy Rivera, a 34-year-old suspect. Rivera is now facing charges of murder and attempted murder for his alleged actions, including turning the gun on Diller’s partner, Sgt. Sasha Rosen.
Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz announced the charges Thursday, revealing that Rivera, with a history of criminal activities, also faces additional firearms charges. Diller’s partner, Sgt. Rosen, managed to return fire during the altercation, leading to Rivera being hospitalized with his injuries after a struggle ensued.
The shooting took place in Far Rockaway, Queens, when Diller and Sgt. Rosen approached a car that was illegally parked. Rivera, sitting in the passenger’s seat, allegedly opened fire when asked to step out of the vehicle, hitting Diller in the stomach below his vest.
Despite Rivera’s attempts to harm Sgt. Rosen, the gun jammed and no further harm was inflicted. Rivera is set to be arraigned as soon as he is medically fit to appear in court for his actions that led to the tragic death of Officer Diller.
Community members gathered for a candlelight vigil in honor of Diller, showing their support for the fallen officer. A funeral for Diller is scheduled for Saturday in his hometown of Massapequa Park, New York. The incident has raised concerns about the safety of law enforcement officers and the availability of illegal firearms in the hands of individuals with criminal backgrounds.
The suspects involved in Diller’s death, Rivera and Lindy Jones, have prior felony convictions and are facing charges related to the incident. Despite efforts to bring justice for Diller’s family, the tragic loss of the dedicated officer has left a void in the community.
