Teacher attacked at Vere Technical High School prompts urgent meeting and suspension of classes

Clarendon, Jamaica – The Minister of Education, Fayval Williams, has strongly denounced the violent incident that occurred at Vere Technical High School in Clarendon. The altercation, which took place on the school premises, involved a teacher and relatives of a student. Williams expressed deep concern over the incident, emphasizing the importance of maintaining safety within school grounds.

Efforts have been made by the Ministry of Education to address and prevent school violence through various initiatives, with a call for parents, guardians, and community members to play an active role in curbing such behavior. Williams expressed disappointment in seeing a parent involved in a violent act on school property. In response to the incident, classes at Vere Technical were suspended following a sit-in protest by teachers against the decision by the police to press charges against a female teacher who had been attacked by a student’s relatives. The principal of the school, Oneil Lewin, mentioned that the teacher was taken into custody and charged after sustaining injuries from the student’s mother.
