MT. HOREB, Wis. – Tragedy struck outside a middle school in Wisconsin, as a student was fatally shot by law enforcement while carrying a pellet gun on Wednesday morning. The incident, which unfolded near Mount Horeb Middle School, located approximately 20 miles southwest of Madison, prompted a response from local police officers.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice, the shooting occurred after authorities were alerted to a person with a backpack and a long gun in the vicinity of the school shortly after 11 a.m. Responding officers encountered a 14-year-old boy identified as a student, who was found east of the school’s main entrance on Garfield Street.
Upon being instructed to drop the pellet gun, the teen reportedly pointed it at the officers, leading to them opening fire. Tragically, the student lost his life at the scene of the confrontation. Fortunately, no other individuals were harmed during the incident.
The weapon recovered by authorities was determined to be a Ruger .177 caliber pellet rifle, shedding light on the nature of the perceived threat. The officers involved in the shooting were reportedly equipped with body cameras, a detail that adds accountability and transparency to the investigation process.
In response to the tragic outcome, the Wisconsin DOJ’s Division of Criminal Investigation has assumed responsibility for looking into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
