Teenager from Flint Pleads Guilty to Involuntary Manslaughter in Friend’s Shooting Death

Flint, Michigan – A teenager from Flint has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter after a tragic incident involving the shooting death of his friend in January 2023. Makhi McPherson, who was 17 at the time of the shooting, confessed to playing with a gun with another friend when it accidentally discharged in the basement of his aunt’s house. The bullet struck 16-year-old Willie Smith II, leading to his tragic death.

McPherson, now 18, acknowledged that the shooting was accidental and reached a plea agreement with the Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office. He pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, and a felony firearms charge was dropped. While initially charged with open murder, prosecutors believed the shooting was unintentional but still held McPherson accountable for his negligent actions.

According to the Genesee County Prosecutor’s Office, McPherson did not intend to harm his friend, but his careless behavior resulted in the tragic outcome. As a result, he now faces a potential sentence of up to 15 years in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for June 10 before Genesee County Circuit Court Judge Elizabeth Kelly.
