Boulder, Colorado — A suspect in an alleged act of terror during a recent pro-Israel demonstration has been identified as a man living in the United States illegally, according to the Department of Homeland Security. According to authorities, the 45-year-old, named Mohamed Soliman, has been involved in an incident that sent eight individuals to the hospital.
Soliman entered the country on a B2 tourist visa in August 2022 and subsequently applied for asylum. However, his visa expired in February 2023. Although he was granted a work permit following the expiration of his visa, it has since lapsed, leaving him without legal status in the United States.
On Sunday afternoon, during a “Run for Their Lives” event aimed at raising awareness about hostages held by Hamas, Soliman allegedly unleashed chaos by using a makeshift flamethrower and throwing an incendiary device into a crowd of demonstrators, according to federal investigators. Witnesses reported hearing chants of “Free Palestine” from the suspect during the attack, intensifying an already charged atmosphere.
The demonstration gathered individuals advocating for the immediate release of hostages amid escalating tensions related to the ongoing conflict in the region. Eight people, aged between 52 and 88, suffered injuries, primarily from burns, as a result of the incident. Authorities confirmed that six of these victims have since been released from medical care, while two others remain in critical but stable condition.
Boulder police reported that Soliman had been apprehended and is facing a range of serious felony charges, including the use of an incendiary device. Additionally, he faces a charge that appears to involve first-degree murder, though it is unclear whether this pertains to an active intent to kill. So far, no fatalities have been reported.
Currently, Soliman is being held on a substantial bond of $10 million and is scheduled to appear in court. The investigation is ongoing, with the FBI working closely alongside local law enforcement, ensuring that all aspects of the incident are thoroughly examined.
As the community comes to terms with the shocking events, officials have stepped up security measures at similar gatherings to prevent potential threats. This incident underscores the persistent volatility surrounding protests in the region and highlights the urgent need for safety during public demonstrations, particularly in times of heightened emotions and geopolitical tensions.
Updates will follow as more information becomes available surrounding the incident and its aftermath.
