DALLAS, TX – A Texas man has been sentenced to life in prison for the murder of his girlfriend, a case that gripped the community due to its tragic circumstances. The sentence was handed down to Harold Lavance Thompson, 23, after a jury found him guilty in the death of 26-year-old Gabriella Gonzalez.
The courtroom in Dallas County was somber on Monday as Judge Chika Anyiam delivered the life sentence, acknowledging the gravity of the crime committed on May 10, 2023. Thompson, who had been detained since his arrest, was credited for 636 days he had already spent in custody.
The events leading to the sentencing unfolded on Walton Walker Boulevard, where Dallas police arrived to a grim scene. Gonzalez had been fatally shot multiple times, her life abruptly ended in a violent encounter that shocked onlookers.
Witnesses recounted the horrifying episode. Gonzalez’s sister remembered passing by the couple shortly before the gunfire, while another witness vividly described Thompson’s aggressive actions—putting Gonzalez in a chokehold just before the fatal shots were fired. Despite attempts to help, Gonzalez could not be saved.
Authorities utilized surveillance footage to piece together the incident, which confirmed the distressing testimonies from witnesses. The footage showed Thompson’s initial attack on Gonzalez and then the subsequent shots, solidifying the prosecution’s case against him.
The investigation into Gonzalez’s murder revealed a troublesome motive. Earlier, she had traveled to Colorado to undergo an abortion, a decision that reportedly led to Thompson’s violent outburst. She had only returned to Dallas on the night preceding the attack.
According to police records, Thompson was believed to be the father of the unborn child and had vehemently opposed Gonzalez’s decision. This conflict was a crucial factor contributing to the tragic end of Gonzalez’s life.
Court documents also highlighted Thompson’s history of violence toward Gonzalez. In March 2023, a warrant had been issued against him for physically assaulting her during her pregnancy. Fearing for her safety, Gonzalez had expressed concerns over Thompson’s threats against her and her family from a previous relationship.
Following his conviction, Thompson remains in Dallas County Jail without the possibility of bond, a decision reflecting the seriousness of his crime and the threat he posed to his victim.
